Captain Hatsman was a fun side project for James Huggins. As a lover of awesome hats, he took it upon himself to build a website that collated hats from all of his favorite brands into one place. It would automatically update whenever a new hat would drop from one of those brands. James contacted Good Craft looking to have a fun character illustrated to personify the 'Captain Hatsman' brand.
James wanted the character to look authentically vintage, which was right up Good Craft's alley. Captain Hatsman was to be drawn as a boy wearing a hat with a joyful expression on his face. We worked together team to make sure we got the details just right.
CONCEPT SKETCHES
NOTE: Each concept character was drawn with different historical influences. While each concept is different, they all are united in expressing a happy, joyful emotion through their eyes and smile.
HOW IT WENT
The final Captain Hatsman mark is reminiscent of a vintage advertising character from the 50s and 60s. As a bonus, Good Craft ended up delivering three versions of the character, with the difference being in the eyes. That allows for some fun versatility in future uses!
